AL PLATNER is a maker from Atlanta, Georgia. The artist uses natural materials like clay, metal, leather, and plants, and draws on their background in gender studies and queer theory. Platner creates work about identity, expression, and contemporary life. Their recent solo exhibition, Self: Under Construction, featured an interactive display of ceramic body parts with leather straps. Surrounded by mirrors, viewers could try on a diverse range of pieces, many of which were cast from real people. The goal of this installation was to allow others to experiment with their concept of the body while empowering them to empathize.
Platner makes functional objects, sculpture, and two dimensional work, and will earn their BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design this year.
